5 Early Signs of Dyslexia in Children

Many children with dyslexia go undiagnosed for years because early signs are often mistaken for “laziness” or “lack of focus.” Recognising the indicators early allows for timely support and confidence building.

1. Difficulty learning letter sounds

If your child forgets letter sounds or struggles to blend simple words, it could be an early sign of phonological challenges or sound triggers.

2. Slow or inaccurate reading and/or avoiding reading aloud

Children may read very slowly, skip words, or guess from context instead of decoding each word.

Many dyslexic children become anxious when asked to read in front of others, often due to fear of embarrassment.

3. Frequent spelling errors

Even after practice, common words like because or friend remain inconsistent.

4. Trouble remembering sequences

Difficulty recalling days of the week or instructions may also point to dyslexia.

5. Confusing similar letters

Letter reversals, such as (b/d, p/q) are one of the common telltale signs of dyslexia.

If several of these signs sound familiar, consider arranging a dyslexia screening.
