5 Signs of Dyslexia in Adults

Dyslexia can remain undiagnosed into adulthood — many adults develop coping strategies that mask their difficulties. Here are five common signs:

1. Reading is slow and tiring
Adults with dyslexia often reread paragraphs, feel drained after reading, or lose their place while reading.

2. Spelling and written expression are inconsistent
Despite strong oral language, written spelling can be poor or variable (even for commonly used words).

3. Avoiding written tasks
A tendency to delegate writing, use templates, or use speech-to-text tools frequently can suggest struggles.

4. Short-term memory or sequencing issues
Forgetting names, instructions, or steps in a process can co-occur with dyslexia-related working memory challenges.

5. Anxiety around reading or public speaking
Low confidence when asked to read aloud or present may be a psychosocial consequence of long-term difficulties.
